Sainsbury Institute joins Yakult in their celebration of 20 years in the UK at Noh Reimagined Festival
On 13-14 May 2016, our Executive Director, Mizutori Mami, was invited by one of our key supporters, Yakult UK, to join Mr Matsubara Hiroyasu the Managing Director and his team in the celebration of their 20th anniversary in the UK. The celebration took place at the Noh Reimagined Festival, a two-day festival at Kings Place in London, which Yakult UK supported together with three other foundations.
Not only inviting our Executive Director to the festival, Yakult UK also generously donated tickets so that members of the Friends of the Sainsbury Institute had the unique opportunity to take part in the festival. Lucky winners of the tickets were able to join the workshop, ‘Noh in Focus – Movement in Noh: The Dynamism of Stillness’, where they were taught by the master actor, Kanze Yoshimasa, some highly stylised movements of Noh focusing on concentration and stillness with an inward-focused energy. Others had the opportunity to attend a session entitled ‘Noh Inspired – Masking and Enmasking: Noh Theatre as a Strategy in Contemporary Art and Performance’. The session consisted of three performances by British musicians and Noh practitioner, followed by a panel discussion. They explored the art of Noh and its unique musical rhythms and tempos that have inspired artists across diverse art forms. Noh originated in Japan in the 14th century and is a total art form comprising drama, music and dance. It is one of the oldest unbroken performance traditions in the world. This festival is believed to be the first of its type to be staged in the UK.
Yakult UK is committed to its sponsorship activities, supporting the promotion of Japanese Studies, as well as helping to share Japanese arts and culture with a wider audience. We are extremely fortunate that the Sainsbury Institute and the University of East Anglia are amongst their key charity partners and we are grateful for their continuing generous support.
